Coastline Church - Carlsbad, CA
"We could not have been more blessed with a better AVL company to partner with in our journey to create a space where people’s lives are changed. Every detail matters, and the folks at Vantage Pro knew that. They treated our church like it was their own, working tirelessly to ensure we are able to provide an incredible experience for our members.”- Josh McCaskill, Executive Pastor, Coastline Church

In 2010, Coastline Church was re-launched with new Lead Pastor Aaron Jayne, who brought with him a passion to help people connect with God without letting church structure and programs get in the way. Focused on reaching out to the non-churched community of North San Diego County, Coastline Church saw immediate growth, and for years showed no signs of slowing down. What did eventually slow Coastline’s growth was an issue many churches face, space for family ministry. For a church to grow and thrive in a suburban area filled with young families, having a great service once a week isn’t going to cut it. Ministry space for children, youth, and small groups is critical for reaching young families, and Coastline Church simply didn’t have that space. In 2020, the church broke ground on a new Family Ministry Building, dedicating the first floor to Coastline Kids, and the second floor to Middle and High School students with an additional large multi-purpose auditorium.

“The Coastline team really wanted the best of both worlds,” explains Duke DeJong, Integration Lead for Vantage Pro. “Each of the gathering spaces in the new building had to be simple enough to be operated by those leading elementary grade level ministry, but also serve as overflow rooms or conference breakout rooms for special events. The large multi-purpose space took this to the extreme, essentially being a 250 seat copy of the existing Sanctuary systems, but also having a built-in easy operation mode for when it was simply a large training/teaching room. “

For the Coastline Kids and Youth gathering spaces, the core goal was to find a combination of simplicity and effectiveness, allowing ministry leaders to engage youth and children without having complex systems that would be a distraction to them. Utilizing a robust Symetrix Prism and Dante network, the entire building shares a single audio network, allowing audio from the Sanctuary and the large meeting rooms to be passed between each other, as well as to the Martin Audio C4.8 ceiling speakers inside the building and CDD 6 Weatherized speakers on the outside. The Symetrix network with touch panel and push button controllers located in various parts of the building also give the ability for an easy operation mode, allowing the larger gathering spaces use of their Shure SLX-D wireless mics, the computer, and other key audio feeds to be utilized without the need for the audio console to be turned on. The lighting systems were designed with similar functionality utilizing Interactive Technologies’ Cue Server platform. With a combination of touchscreen and push button controllers, basic lighting control is accessible to the least experienced users, and more advanced control is available when needed as well. Lighting fixtures include a mixture of existing LED fixtures as well as new Chauvet DJ EVE Par and COLORband linear LED fixtures. Video for these rooms was also designed with simplicity and flexibility in mind, with a combination of large displays and projectors being driving by a Kramer HDMI auto-switcher with multiple options for where a computer or Blu-ray player could be operated from. Video distribution throughout the building, generally utilizing an announcement loop, fed from the large multi-purpose space, or the Sanctuary, occurs over HD-SDI fed from a Ross NK router.

The large multi-purpose gathering space had a more robust vision of becoming a scaled down version of the Sanctuary, allowing Coastline Church to have the same capability as their main room. But despite the desire for the full functionality of the Sanctuary, it too needed to have an easy operation mode, allowing it to be used for smaller group gatherings and teaching opportunities. Speech, vocals and instruments utilize a full complement of microphones including (8) channels of Shure ULX-D wireless microphones along with DPA, Heil, and Shure wired microphones. Monitoring is delivered via (8) Shure PSM 300 wireless IEM systems, all being driven from the Midas Pro 2 console, mirroring the setup from the main Sanctuary. A Symetrix Prism DSP brings in easy operator mode, allowing complex services to be driven from the Midas console, but simple events to simply be auto-mixed from the Symetrix system. Audio coverage was particularly complex for this space, with two large beams that are only 10’ above the floor creating challenges for audio coverage. A pair of Martin Audio CDD 12s with SXC118 cardioid subwoofers serve as the main PA, with an additional pair of CDD 12’s serving as delay speakers due to the heigh limitations of the room.

“When the Coastline Team first saw the speaker system, they seemed hesitant that it would meet their needs,” shares Marc Breda, Project Lead for Vantage Pro. “But once we fired up the speakers, they were so blown away by how good it sounded, saying it was by far the best system they have on campus.”

Lighting for the large multi-purpose space also had a tall order (in a shorter room) since this room would be used as a simple meeting room most often, but a full alternate Sanctuary at other times. This included the ability to capture and stream video from this venue, so lighting had to be camera versatile with very short throws. (30) ChromaQ Inspire Mini’s provide RGBW house lighting for the space, (8) Chauvet Professional Ovation F-145 fresnel fixtures provided the video-friendly front lighting, and a mixture of Chauvet Professional F-55 fresnels and Chauvet DJ EVE pars provided the top and back light. Staying true to the vision of the building, lighting control has both easy operation mode through Interactive Technologies, and full show control with a High End Systems Hog 4 PC system. The shorter space, coupled with a shallow stage, also proved to be a challenge from a stage design perspective. With lighting so close to the stage, and a strong desire for the background to look great on camera, the stage look was finished with a 27.9’ by 8.2’ ADJ LED wall the church already owned.

The video system, designed to broadcast throughout the campus as well as online, was all designed around the backbone of a Ross Carbonite Black Solo 13 and NK router, allowing all inputs to be routed to any destination in the new building in addition to the Sanctuary in the building next door via fiber. With a limited seat count already at 250 seats, cameras had to be very capable, but low profile, without needed to eliminate any seats for control. (2) Canon XF405 cameras are stationed at FOH for manual operation as lead follow cameras, and (4) Marshall POV cameras are situated throughout the room to provide un-manned video angles to the stage. A Clearcom wired intercom system provides communication for the entire production team in the multi-purpose space in addition to the backstage green room and the broadcast audio room.
